This week for HOPE Week, the SFMS Hope Squad wanted to do something a little extra sweet to remind everyone that even when things feel heavy, Hope Floats.
The members of the HOPE Squad had a blast serving up root beer floats and seeing all the smiles! Whether it’s through a cold treat or a kind word, we’re here to make sure every student knows they belong and have a community that supports them.
A massive shout-out to Ten Wasp Brewing for their incredibly generous donation of the root beer! We are so lucky to have local partners who care about our students and mental health awareness as much as we do. Thank you for helping us make this event a success!

The current 5th and 6th grade students will fly to Washington D.C. on June 7-10, 2027 with chaperones Renee Maher, Sara Haught, and Kurt Volker. Students will tour the Jamestown Settlement, Williamsburg, and Washington D.C. (The National Mall, Museums, and Arlington National Cemetery,...). Community Insurance of Sumner and Auto Owner Insurance donated $6,000 to the students who will be attending the trip. This donation will give each child about $300 for their trip expenses. Students have been doing various fundraisers to collect money to put towards the cost of this trip. This donation means so much to the families of the students participating in this trip. A big thank you to Kelby Bergmann, Community Insurance of Sumner, and Auto Owner Insurance!

MS Families, the boys track meet at New Hampton for today (4/27) has been canceled due to weather conditions. There will be practice afterschool.
Mrs. Kenan had some special visitors this winter—long-eared owls! 🦉 These owls spent the season at her home and left behind quite the discovery…owl pellets!
She brought the pellets into her 5th grade agricultural studies class, where students had the chance to carefully dissect them and uncover what the owls had been eating. Students were fascinated to learn that owl pellets aren’t actually waste like many people think—they’re made up of the parts of an owl’s meal that can’t be digested, like bones and fur.
Owls regurgitate these pellets, and scientists (and our students!) can study them to learn exactly what the owl ate. What a fun, hands-on learning experience that sparked a lot of curiosity in the classroom!

MS Families: Today's (4/23) track meet at Oelwein has been postponed due to the potential threat of weather. We will keep you updated when a new date has been decided. Both girls and boys teams will have practice today after school. The shuttle will run as normal at 5 pm.
Yesterday, our 7th graders visited Pioneer Power Acres in Fredericksburg, where they explored how farming and agriculture have evolved over time. A big thank you to the volunteers who made the day engaging and hands-on for our students!

A big thank you to our high school FFA members, Jamie Jones and Sydney Zupke, for coming in to share all about their program! We appreciate you being such great role models for our middle school students and getting them excited about future involvement in FFA. Thanks for inspiring the next group of leaders!

The SFMS Band Program is now accepting instrument donations! If you have a gently used instrument sitting at home, consider giving it a second life in the hands of one of our students.
Your donation helps provide access to music education, build confidence, and create meaningful experiences for our young musicians.
We are accepting donations now through the end of the school year AND all summer long!
Drop-off locations: SFMS or SFHS
Questions? Contact Mrs. Kurtz at kurtza@sfcougars.k12.ia.us

Our 7th grade Family and Consumer Science (FCS) students took their learning on the road today! As part of their Child Development unit, Mr. Carpenter’s class visited Mrs. Schmitt’s preschool room for some hands-on interaction and play-based learning. The middle schoolers moved beyond the classroom to observe developmental milestones in action, and they were able to practice patience, communication, and leadership skills. Creating bridges between different age groups in our district makes us all stronger!

Thank you to Bremer County Conservation for visiting our students and leading a fun, interactive game all about agricultural byproducts! Students loved learning how everyday items come from agriculture in such an engaging, hands-on way. We truly appreciate your continued involvement and support in our school!

SFMS 7th graders engineered and designed egg protective containers and then tested their projects from a classroom drop of 8.7 feet, a second drop in the multipurpose gym of 11.3 feet, and finally some groups dropped their eggs from an impressive crow's nest height of 22 feet! These kids are amazing!

A big thank you to Madelyn Hennings, 2025 Alternate Chickasaw County Fair Queen, for visiting our school! Madelyn shared about her role, promoting agricultural education and community involvement, and led students through fun, hands-on activities focused on leadership. We appreciate you taking the time to inspire our students and be such a positive role model!
