A special thanks to Braelyn, Kendall and Callie for helping our 8th graders with their Mock Interviews!

On May 6th, the sixth grade students traveled to Decorah for a day full of learning and fun! Our final stop included a yummy treat. Even though it was chilly, students enjoyed hand-scooped ice cream from Sugar Bowl. Thank you for taking the time to package our ice cream orders!
Students enjoyed their treats at the Decorah Fish Hatchery, where Josh, our DNR guide, explained how Decorah uses cold water to raise rainbow trout and how ponds and streams across Iowa are stocked with fish. Students even had the opportunity to feed the fish! It was a great ending to a fun and memorable day!

On Wednesday, May 6th, the sixth grade students traveled to Decorah for an exciting day of learning and exploration! Their second stop was Phelps Park for lunch — and it was definitely a chilly one! The teacher chaperones were especially thankful for warm drinks and an extra boost from Mill Street Mocha.
The students then traveled to the Luther College Planetarium, where they warmed up while learning about constellations, the solar system, and important stars. A huge thank you to Michelle Einck and the Science Department at Luther College for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students!

The sixth grade students traveled to Decorah on May 6th! Their first stop was the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, where students learned about Norwegian history, heritage, and customs. They toured the museum, visited Heritage Park, and created a paper craft using traditional Norwegian weaving techniques.
A huge thank you to Chivonne Marlow and all of the volunteers and staff at the Vesterheim who helped make this day such a meaningful experience for our students!

It was a day full of learning, exploration, and fun! Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible for our students.

SFMS held its annual Chicken Dinner Fundraiser on April 19! Congratulations to Mrs. Maher’s 7th grade homeroom for being our top-selling class, and a special shoutout to Ellie Aries as our top individual seller! This week for HOPE Week, the SFMS Hope Squad wanted to do something a little extra sweet to remind everyone that even when things feel heavy, Hope Floats.
The members of the HOPE Squad had a blast serving up root beer floats and seeing all the smiles! Whether it’s through a cold treat or a kind word, we’re here to make sure every student knows they belong and have a community that supports them.
A massive shout-out to Ten Wasp Brewing for their incredibly generous donation of the root beer! We are so lucky to have local partners who care about our students and mental health awareness as much as we do. Thank you for helping us make this event a success!

The current 5th and 6th grade students will fly to Washington D.C. on June 7-10, 2027 with chaperones Renee Maher, Sara Haught, and Kurt Volker. Students will tour the Jamestown Settlement, Williamsburg, and Washington D.C. (The National Mall, Museums, and Arlington National Cemetery,...). Community Insurance of Sumner and Auto Owner Insurance donated $6,000 to the students who will be attending the trip. This donation will give each child about $300 for their trip expenses. Students have been doing various fundraisers to collect money to put towards the cost of this trip. This donation means so much to the families of the students participating in this trip. A big thank you to Kelby Bergmann, Community Insurance of Sumner, and Auto Owner Insurance!

MS Families, the boys track meet at New Hampton for today (4/27) has been canceled due to weather conditions. There will be practice afterschool.
Mrs. Kenan had some special visitors this winter—long-eared owls! 🦉 These owls spent the season at her home and left behind quite the discovery…owl pellets!
She brought the pellets into her 5th grade agricultural studies class, where students had the chance to carefully dissect them and uncover what the owls had been eating. Students were fascinated to learn that owl pellets aren’t actually waste like many people think—they’re made up of the parts of an owl’s meal that can’t be digested, like bones and fur.
Owls regurgitate these pellets, and scientists (and our students!) can study them to learn exactly what the owl ate. What a fun, hands-on learning experience that sparked a lot of curiosity in the classroom!
