2nd Quarter 8th grade robotics class designed, built, wired, coded and then raced automated vehicles for their end of quarter project. While there was a clear winner, all groups did an outstanding job!

7th Grade students in Mrs. Rucker's science class created models and then demonstrated various relationships between the Earth, moon and sun. They modeled lunar phases, seasons, and solar and lunar eclipses. Knowledge and application were shining brightly today in class!

SFMS 7th grade science students participated in a STEM project, "Mayflower Boats" where they constructed a small boat out of a few classroom supplies. Their criteria was to build a boat that would float in water and hold the weight of 5 pilgrims (aka pennies). Once those criteria were met, an added challenge of adding weight was given. Our winning boats held over 80 grams! Great job using those engineering and design skills, Cougar 7th Graders.

🐝 A huge thank-you to Madison from Kirchland Farms! She came in today to teach our 5th grade Agricultural Studies students all about honeybees—how they live, work, communicate, and play such an important role in our environment. Our students loved learning about these amazing pollinators and gaining a better understanding of their importance in agriculture. We’re grateful for community partners like Kirchland Farms who help bring real-world learning into our classroom! 🍯

Our 5th grade agricultural studies students had two special visitors today! High school FFA members Jamie Jones and Sydney Zupke stopped by to share all about FFA and what the program has to offer. They talked with students about the many activities, competitions, and hands-on learning opportunities that come with being part of FFA, and they did an amazing job getting our students excited about joining when they reach high school. 🌾🐄🌽 We love seeing older students inspire the next generation!

Our 5th grade Agricultural Studies students loved learning all about pork farming in Iowa from our special guests at Reicks View Farms! They shared how pigs are raised and cared for on the farm — and even brought pork sticks for students to try! The highlight of the day was definitely getting to pet the pig! 🐖

Our students have been strengthening their leadership skills through some fun Ricochet lessons provided by ISU Extension & Outreach! The two activities shown are called Galloping Hands and Zoo-sertive! In Galloping Hands, students practiced teamwork, communication, and coordination as they worked together to keep a group rhythm going, showing how leaders rely on collaboration to reach a shared goal. In Zoo-sertive, they explored how to be assertive leaders by expressing ideas confidently, listening respectfully, and supporting others. Both lessons challenged students to think, communicate, and lead in positive and meaningful ways!

Our 6th graders explored real-world measurement through a series of fun, hands-on stations! Students practiced measuring length, volume, weight, and mass while deepening their understanding of how different units are used in everyday life.

From measuring their own height, to finding the volume of a box, to comparing quarts and liters and weighing everyday items, students made meaningful connections between math and the world around them! 🌟
