Today, SFMS celebrated halftime of our ReadBowl Competition with the Cougar and SFMS Cheerleaders. Our top reading class was 7th Grade Literature Class 2. They read an average of 373 minutes per student! Our top readers in each grade level this week were Lucille Kleiss, Caleena Scott, Lilly Pratt, Theo Johnson, and Bella Sorenson. Please keep encouraging your children to read over the weekend! Quarter 2 reading logs are due on Monday.
Mr. Gates' 4th grade class and Mr. Skurdal's 2nd grade class learned together using Sphero Indi. Sphero Indi is a small, programmable robot designed to teach young children the basics of coding and computational thinking. Indi is an interactive way to introduce children to STEM principles while fostering creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
🚌🚌 We're thrilled to announce the arrival of two new school buses purchased in July with a Federal Grant offsetting $50,000 from the total cost by the District! 🚌🚌 These buses are equipped with seatbelts, keeping our students safer on every ride.
Iowa law now requires seatbelt use on all school buses built after 2020. Our district policy aligns with this, prioritizing student safety.
Seatbelt use is now required by Board Policy for any School Bus where seatbelts are equipped. This currently impacts the Bear Route (Mr. Schmitz) and the Rooster Route (Mr. Suckow), with Mrs. Stange's route following shortly! Students will review their use and function with the Driver. Students who refuse to use them, can be subject to disciplinary actions per Board Policy.

Sumner-Fredericksburg bowling and Girls wrestling tournament will be held as scheduled today. The bowling meet will start at 4 PM and the girls wrestling tournament will start at 4:30 PM.
Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools will be closed today (Tuesday, Jan. 21st) due to extreme cold.

"Junior wrestler Sam Egan is currently 21-2 on the year and ranked 11th according to IA Wrestle. Sam is a returning state place-winner who dedicates his time not only to the classroom but also to his craft. He is an honor student and is involved in cross country, baseball, and wrestling. Sam is also one of our team leaders who works hard to elevate himself and his team to the next level." -Coach Meyer
"Cami reached her 100 career victory milestone this past Thursday. She is only the 2nd Cougar girls wrestler to achieve this feat! Cami is currently ranked 6th at 115 pounds in Class 1A and holds a 30-10 overall record so far this season. Cami displays her passion, grit, and dedication on a daily basis for the Cougars and helps lead her teammates to work hard and find the joy in this extremely demanding and tough sport." -Coach Jones

SFMS is almost done with the 1st Quarter of our ReadBowl Competition! To celebrate, we did "The Wave" in the direction of Iowa City. We then made cards for the children at the Stead Family Children's Hospital. The students also wore their team apparel to celebrate our first successful week! Cougar boys basketball information for Saturday at Upper Iowa. We play at 11 AM vs Independence.
MS TAG/ELP students traveled to Upper Iowa University to do a practice Mathcounts competition with other area schools. Out of 116 students, Connor Mitchell placed 2nd and Greg Baker 3rd. Connor Mitchell, Garrytt Laabs, Marshall Dillon & Kade Wendland placed 5th in the team competition.
This Thursday night, boys and girls wrestling will recognize our wrestling parents and Seniors. On this special night, we will pay tribute to all of the support and dedication our wrestling parents and Senior wrestlers have given to Cougar wrestling.
Today's Cougar basketball schedule: 4 pm JV Boys (2Q), full 9-10 game @ 4:30. Varsity girls start at 6:15 pm with Varsity boys to follow the conclusion of the girls game. Purchase your tickets via bound, no cash is accepted. Go Cougars!
The entire SFMS will be competing in the 2025 ReadBowl, starting today and continuing until February 7. This is a reading competition that is put on by Malcolm Mitchell, a former New England Patriot and Super Bowl Champion. Students will keep track of the minutes that they read on a weekly log sheet. Please encourage your child to read at home at night. We would greatly appreciate that! Please help your student fill out the log and put your initials next to the time, so that we can keep an honor system. The teachers will enter the information onto the ReadBowl website and we will be competing with schools all around the world. Each week, students will get to see some inspiring messages about reading from NFL players. The winner of the competition will be announced on live tv before the Super Bowl. We are also going to be competing against each other at school. Literature classes will make up our teams. Student progress will be displayed in our main hallway. The SFMS Lit class with the most minutes per average will get to have some free gym time! On Fridays, we would also love for students to wear team apparel (jerseys, sports teams shirts, organization or group shirts).
Today's Cougar girls basketball game with Waverly-Shell Rock will be a Varsity girls game only, starting at 6:15 PM.
SFHS Student-Athlete of the Week: Brooklyn Bushman & Kallen Wilharm.
Brooklyn has been a leader by example for Cougar bowling and is leading the team with a 142 average. Brooklyn is a pleasure to coach and is a joy to be around. She always has a positive attitude and picks up her teammates when they are down. -Coach Skoda
Kallen embodies what it means to be a true team player. He is always bringing a positive attitude to practice and games. His unselfishness is remarkable, often sacrificing minutes and his body for the betterment of team success. Kallen leads our team in charges taken and is a champion in his role for Cougar basketball. -Coach Quigley
