Sumner-Fredericksburg Community School District

Happy July to the entire Sumner-Fredericksburg community! With just over a month remaining before the launch of the 2026–2027 school year, our district teams have been hard at work making final logistical preparations. While much of this behind-the-scenes planning has been underway for a long time, last year was truly about laying the groundwork for a strong, vibrant future in our schools.

We are making significant, transformative transitions across the district. Our goal in implementing these changes is not only to alter the future trajectory for our students and community for the better, but to serve as a beacon of leadership and support for other school districts across Iowa. Collaborative work makes everyone stronger!

Understanding the "Why": Reframing How We Talk and Connect

Whenever a community undergoes major shifts, questions naturally arise. I chose to move to a small town because I love small-town life. There is no "bigger or better" place for me—Sumner-Fredericksburg is the bigger and better. As long as this community will have me, I intend to stay right here, lead our district, and complete my career as a Cougar.

One challenge of tight-knit communities, however, is our tendency to talk. Talking is wonderful—until it turns into a spiral of worry. Human psychology tells us that a vast majority of automatic thoughts are negative, meaning that what we say aloud often stems from fear or nervousness about the unknown.

When big changes happen without clear context, assumptions take over. Our new communication campaign is designed specifically to counter that:

  • To provide clarity so everyone has honest, factual answers.

  • To highlight initiatives and behind-the-scenes work you might not yet be aware of.

  • To foster genuine connection across our towns so we can build a unified future together.

Three Official Communication Channels

To make getting news simple and reliable, we are consolidating our district updates across three primary locations:

  1. The Local Newspaper: Video messages will be adapted into print transcripts and articles so non-digital readers stay fully informed. If you don’t currently subscribe, I strongly encourage you to do so!

  2. The District Website (sfcougars.org): Updates will be regularly posted directly in the primary news feed, located just below the main banner image on our homepage.

  3. Official Facebook Page: Quick announcements, media, and video updates will be shared directly to your social feeds.

By releasing identical, coordinated information across all three outlets throughout the school year, you will always know exactly where to go for the facts.

The 5 Focus Pillars for 2026–2027

To keep our conversations focused on constructive progress, our updates throughout the school year will center around five main themes:

1. Facility Planning, Bond, & Referendum

Detailed updates on building projects, facility needs, and strategic long-term planning for our district’s physical spaces.

2. Demystifying "Future Frontiers"

We want to provide total transparency on what Future Frontiers is—and what it isn't. This initiative represents a win-win-win-win:

  • A win for Sumner-Fredericksburg staff and students through enhanced opportunities.

  • A win for Future Frontiers as an educational model impacting regional kids.

  • A win for surrounding Iowa school districts through shared strength and regional collaboration.

  • A win financially for our district.

Through our growing partnerships, including just this week, both Grow Cedar Valley and the Cedar Valley Coalition, we are tapping into vital regional resources and collaborations that strengthen our entire district's financial and educational foundation.

3. School Board Actions & Decisions

While public board meetings are always open to community members, busy schedules often prevent people from attending. We will explicitly summarize key board decisions, policies, and thematic discussions so you stay informed on district governance.

4. Core Academic Initiatives

Teaching and learning remain the heart of why we exist. We will share regular insights into the academic programs, classroom strategies, and curriculum improvements driving student success.

5. Family Connections & Digital Systems

Connecting current and prospective families with the exact tools, software, and communication systems needed to track student progress, events, and school notices with ease.

A "Radical" Return to Our Roots

We describe this outreach effort as a radical communication campaign. In its truest sense, the word radical comes from the Latin word radix, meaning "to go back to the root."

This campaign isn't about doing something strange or complicated; it is about anchoring ourselves in the roots of who we are, what makes our community tick, and where we are heading together.

Sumner-Fredericksburg is a wonderful place to live, learn, and grow. By keeping our lines of communication open, we can capture our thoughts and words, redirect uncertainty toward positive action, and build a thriving future side by side.

Let’s do this together. Go Cougars! 🐾
