For students whose classroom performance is adversely affecting educational outcomes, each school is required by State law to establish, maintain, and implement a general education intervention procedure. The Special Education Department has developed a General Education Intervention Manual (GEI) that is intended for use by all schools in the corporation.
Durant Elementary has a team of educational professionals that include general education teachers, an at-risk interventionist, special education teachers, and administration. Effective general education intervention teams and procedures have been proven to increase referral accuracy and reduce unnecessary time and expense.
Best practice is to involve the parent/guardian in the general education intervention process. In the event the decision is made to request an evaluation, the parent/guardian would be aware of their child’s learning and/or behavioral needs. If the parent/guardian is unable or unwilling to participate in the GEI process, they must still be kept abreast of the status of the process.
