Character Counts

Building Theme

Each year Durant Elementary implements a theme that encourages good character. The theme is taught and supported by classroom lessons, the principal’s morning announcements, guidance lessons, ENCORE, and Sumner Shuffles. During a Sumner Shuffle all students and staff participate in a cross-grade lesson. The lesson always begins with a piece of literature and is followed up with an activity to reinforce the lesson’s objective.

Read-A-Million-Minutes also connects with the year’s building theme. During the month of February, the entire student body sets individual and class reading goals. Read-A-Million-Minutes has been a tradition at Durant Elementary since 1981.

Encore Celebration

ENCORE is held at Durant Elementary every month. During this monthly celebration, Character Counts is promoted and celebrated.

ENCORE begins with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Character Counts Pledge. These pledges are lead by our fifth grade students. We then sing a song, “We Are the Kids From Durant School."

Other things that take place during ENCORE are celebrating the month’s birthdays with the entire school singing the birthday song, drawing names from the “Bucket of Fun,” and watching a presentation from one of the grades that reinforces with the month’s pillar.

Reading Counts! winners are recognized, and any special guests or upcoming activities are typically acknowledged during ENCORE. And, the student body also sings a song that goes along with the building theme

The ENCORE celebration concludes with the school fight song, "On Cougars".
